Common Sense Media is a nonprofit organization giving kids, families, and schools the tools to make informed choices about media and technology. Families know us for our independent, age-based reviews of movies, TV shows, books, games, podcasts, and apps. Educators use our free curriculum and resources to plan lessons and integrate technology into their teaching practice. At our core, we are a children's advocacy group. We draw on original research, industry expertise, and community partnerships to advocate for laws and policies that help kids thrive.

SCOPE

The AI Engineering Intern sits at the intersection of engineering, product design, and applied AI. The intern will work closely with the Product, Design, and Engineering teams to prototype AI-powered tools and explore scalable ways of building interactive experiences for students.

You will build multiple prototypes and create reusable frameworks that allow multiple interactive experiences to be developed efficiently and responsibly.

The intern will work closely with cross-functional teammates to build, test, and iterate on early-stage AI solutions, with opportunities to explore AI-assisted workflows, rapid prototyping, and responsible AI design. You will integrate AI features through frontier model APIs, emerging agentic frameworks, and beyond.

WHAT YOU'LL DO & LEARN 

Rapid Prototyping & AI Development
 

• Use modern AI development tools (e.g., Codex, Claude Code) to rapidly prototype AI-powered features.
• Build interactive AI experiences tailored for students to drive engagement with our curriculum and enhance learning outcomes.
• Explore how to architect scalable frameworks or platforms that support multiple interactive tools, not just one-off experiences.

Engineering & Product Collaboration

• Partner with product managers, designers, and engineers to translate ideas into functional prototypes.
• Participate in fast, iterative development cycles focused on experimentation and learning.
• Help define technical requirements and implementation approaches for AI-driven features.
   

Testing, Evaluation & Iteration

• Assist in user testing sessions with educators, students, and internal stakeholders to gather feedback.
• Evaluate AI outputs for quality, usability, safety, and alignment with Common Sense Media's values.
• Document experiments, insights, and lessons learned to build an internal knowledge base of effective AI development practices.
   

WHAT WE'RE LOOKING FOR

• Rising junior, senior, or graduate student in computer science, engineering, AI, human-computer interaction, or a related field.
• Strong programming skills (Python, JavaScript, or similar).
• Interest in applied AI, rapid prototyping, and AI-powered product development.
• Curiosity about scalable system design and reusable architecture patterns.
• Comfort working in experimental, fast-moving environments.
• Strong problem-solving skills and a collaborative mindset.
• Passion for education, youth safety, or mission-driven technology.

ADDITIONAL INFORMATION
 

• Reports To: Principal Engineer and Development Manager, Education
• Location: San Francisco, CA
• Duration: June 15–August 21, 2026
• Pay: $25/hr, up to 40 hours/week
  This is a paid opportunity, and we will work with your clinical or internship office for school credit if necessary.
• Interns must be available to attend weekly educational Lunch & Learns, which are held every Wednesday from 12 p.m. to 1 p.m. (PT).
