AI/ML Engineer

KBR’s Advanced Analytics and Cloud Program is seeking a AI/ML Engineer -  Data Scientist in Fort Belvoir, VA to support the Defense Technical Information Center (DTIC) on initiatives advancing knowledge graph engineering, retrieval-augmented generation (RAG), GraphRAG, and AI/ML-driven data discovery. This role is ideal for someone passionate about building cutting-edge analytics capabilities for Department of War missions. As part of a multidisciplinary team of AI engineers, developers, and data scientists, you will collaborate directly with government stakeholders to design, prototype, and implement solutions using modern graph technologies, embeddings, and machine learning methods. Your work will shape the next generation of intelligent information systems across DoW environments.

Roles & Responsibilities

  • Develop, optimize, and maintain knowledge graphs, ontologies, and graph-based data pipelines.
  • Build and deploy RAG and GraphRAG solutions enabling advanced semantic search and intelligent retrieval.
  • Design and generate vector embeddings supporting entity linking, document similarity, and data enrichment.
  • Conduct exploratory data analysis, model development, evaluation, and tuning.
  • Work with government stakeholders to capture requirements and translate them into technical solutions.
  • Contribute to the development of advanced AI/ML prototypes leveraging DoD data.
  • Collaborate with cloud engineers, software developers, and fellow data scientists in an Agile environment.
  • Prepare clear technical documentation, presentations, and demonstrations of analytics capabilities.

Basic Qualifications

  • Active SECRET clearance (U.S. citizenship required; no visa sponsorship available).
  • Bachelors degree in a technical field (Computer Science, Data Science, Engineering, Mathematics, etc.).
  • 3+ years of experience
  • Security+ Certification
  • Experience with Bibliometric Analysis System & Research Organization Registrys (ROR)
  • Experience with: Knowledge graphs (e.g., Neo4j, RDF, SPARQL, Property Graphs), RAG frameworks (ex: GraphRAG workflows, or LLM-augmented semantic retrieval), Embeddings (e.g., sentence transformers, vector search, FAISS, Pinecone, Milvus)
  • Proficiency with Python and common ML/AI libraries (e.g., PyTorch, TensorFlow, scikit-learn).
  • Experience developing APIs and integrating AI/ML solutions into operational systems.

Preferred Quals

  • Experience supporting DoD, DTIC, or other government research/data missions
  • Knowledge of cloud environments (AWS, Azure, or GovCloud)
  • Familiarity with LLM-based architectures, vector databases (FAISS, Pinecone, Milvus), or semantic search systems
  • Experience with big data or distributed processing frameworks (Spark, Ray, Databricks)
  • Background in NLP, document intelligence, information retrieval, or knowledge engineering
  • Experience working in Agile or cross-functional technical teams
  • Master’s degree or higher in a relevant technical field
